Communication Skills
Effective Communication for Meaningful Connection
01
Listening
Are you really listening when you're in a conversation or are you just waiting for your turn to talk? We think we're doing it right but active listening takes a lot of effort and a lot of practice!
Eye contact, being fully present, noticing verbal cues, and asking open-ended questions are great ways to go from hearing to really listening in order to strengthen bonds and communicate clearly.
03
Observing
Being mindful is always a good choice in any situation, but when you are trying to effectively communicate with someone, this is even more important!
Observe what your body is doing. Are you closing yourself by crossing your arms and legs? What does the reaction from your words look like? Are they closing themselves off? Really be aware and take notice of the details.
02
Speaking
We don't always pay attention to how we speak when we communicate. Tone, body language, pace, and specific words can change the direction of a conversation really quick.
Pay attention to the words you say, how you say them, and what your body is saying. These details can make a or break important communication. We all want to trust and feel respected, and how we speak has weight!
04
Empathizing
Empathy is where it's all at in communicating effectively. Feeling truly understood secures connection but how do we do it?
Step 1, 2, and 3 are a great start! Consistency across language makes us feel safe with our emotions and we will be more inclined to share. Also try to consider their perspective from where they stand. We are all unique because individual life experiences made us that way. Respect that and you have just built a fantastic foundation!
